E is for Eeyore

This week's character for AlphaBooks is the ever-despondent Eeyore, from A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh books. The text selection is from Chapter One of The House At Pooh Corner, & features the depressive donkey struggling mightily to simulate optimism.

I had to twist the poor fellow around quite a bit to form any semblance of an "E"-- do you see it?-- but he seems to be bearing it bravely with only a few deep sighs & doleful glances.

You might find more "E"s here & there if you look closely. And if you are flaky enough to count Morse code . . . . . . . there are lots of 'em! ;-)

Acrylic on text scanned from a 1988 E.P. Dutton edition, with some PS tinkering, ~5"x7".

p.s. Did you know that the Pooh stories were based on real toys owned by the real Christopher Robin Milne?

  1. Oh Eeyore, I do adore him so. A character who helps me put things into proper perspective. You picked the perfect quote. Did you try to form your other characters into Alphabet shapes? I hadn't noticed, and I am ashamed if that is so.

    1. Don't worry, Debbie, not all the characters are letter-shaped, but there are several letters worked into each picture. Since Eeyore didn't really have a background to work with, I had to use his body. I'm sure he took it personally... sorry, old chap!

  2. My goodness I cannot look, such angst in those eyes. Why does the cute donkey have to bear such burdens? Still. Seriously cute. :)

    1. Thanks, Cindy, sorry to put you through such pain! I always felt sad for Eeyore, even if he was a bit of a killjoy.

  3. Did you know that they celebrate Eeyore's birthday in Austin? Or at least they used to when I lived there. It was (is?) a big party, in a park close to downtown. When I was little, it was pretty kid-friendly, too.

Man, do I ever have a soft spot for Eeyore. Really for the whole bunch of Pooh animals. You can expect to see some of them in my alphabet when I get to the right letter.

  4. Hey, it's still going on!

I have to remember to check Wikipedia before I post a comment after 5:00 AM.

    1. I was born in Austin, but didn't live there long enough to attend the festivities. If I were Eeyore I'd utter a few mournful words of loss & regret about now. ;-)

  5. I love your Eeyore. It brings back fond memories of my son's favorite quote from him:"You broke my birthday balloon"

  6. Eeyore looks so sad but then again it was his role. But he always seemed to know what to do.
