D is for Don Quixote

This week's entry for AlphaBooks is Don Quixote, the delightfully eccentric knight from the eponymous novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Not only was this one of the world's first novels, it occurs to me that it may also be the first recorded example of medieval cosplay.

I love this passage near the beginning where Cervantes describes the Don's descent into madness due to excessive book consumption. "...and so from little sleep and much reading, his brain dried up and he lost his wits." Let this be a lesson to you, readers! ;-)

Acrylic on text scanned from 1976 Penguin Classics edition, translation by J.M.Cohen, ~4.5"x7.5"

  1. Oh wow! This one is really outstanding. I love the way you scan the text and paint over them. Most often I find myself reading the text. These literary character series so far has been marvelous. Perhaps when you reach the letter O, you may consider painting O-lan from Pearl Buck's The Good Earth? Just a suggestion :)

  2. Oh dear. If excessive book consumption dries up the brain, I have no hope. Your illustration had me immediately linking to Amazon.com to see if I could download a cheap or free digital copy of the book.

However, I'm not impressed with any claim that DON QUIXOTE is "one of the world's first novels," since Japan's THE TALE OF GENJI (authored by a woman, no less!), having been written in the early 1000s, has been called all of the following: the world's first novel, the first modern novel, the first psychological novel or the first novel still to be considered a classic. There are some very good translations in English.

  3. This is wonderful! I'm really enjoying this series. Some "spirited" librarian should have a firm talk with Cervantes....

  4. I love it! Beautiful painting. I'm with Debbie, and if reading too much makes us crazy, I'm in trouble :)

  6. That's a really nice color palette you've got going on there. It's got such a nice friendly soft children's book feel. Awesome!

  9. If excessive book consumption causes madness, then that explains a LOT about me!! GREAT illustration, Leah! Love the furrowed brows!

  10. This fellow is a bit of a departure from your usual exotic creatures, isn't he? I adore him, the way he's tucked into the page. And the subtlety of the "D"...it's a great piece!
