Y is for Yama-oroshi

Apologies for the late post & AlphaBeasts! entry-- lots going on with work & family right now, so I may miss a post here & there in the hubbub.

Yama-oroshi was actually one of my favorite Yokai discoveries-- its whole existence is based on a pun, & there's just something so delightfully random about a radish grater monster!

Acrylic on text scanned from Sears Roebuck Catalog of 1897.

  1. I've never even heard of a radish grater, but I'll keep a look out for him. He's kinda cute in a sharp sort of way. Neat image. Take care!

  4. It's amazing, I looked at this and thought 'katzenjammer kids' and then why? So a visit to Wikipedia turned up a picture of the 'mom' from the Captain and the Kids also Katzenjammer. I am not that old !!! When I was a child there were always old comic books and comic strips at my Grandmother's house and I loved to read the dialect of these characters. The radish grater also makes me think of something Hawaiian, king, god etc., he could be using that radish as a surf board! Sorry for the ramble but I did enjoy the trip back to another time in life.
