I believe this is actually an old piece of window hardware-- if you look closely you can see the screw holes. I'd intended to paint it in color, but after I'd sanded down the tarnished brass I loved the resulting texture so much, I decided to let it shine! I used only black & white acrylic to define the shape & details.It's quite small for a dinosaur- only 1 inch tall x 2½ wide.
Lots of dinosaurs start off teeny, right? Maybe it's newly hatched.

ReplyDeleteI didn't notice that you had painted only the negative area and left the brass till I read what you wrote. You saved the beautiful texture. You really are thinking all the time aren't you?
ReplyDeleteHey, speaking of common metal objects, I think that old nickel plating is the most beautiful. It has a much warmer tone than chrome which replaced nickel in the late 20s.
The Texture is beautiful. You know, I love these things. Sometimes there are found on least expected place...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ted & Art! I too love old metal bits of all sorts. Yes, they turn up in the oddest places... I've dug up quite a few in the garden, & to me they are genuine buried treasure. Our old 20's house has most of its original hardware... also most of its original wiring & plumbing, which can be a problem! Our front door actually has two brass doorknobs on the inside, which confuses everyone thoroughly.
ReplyDeleteWell whad'ya know, I have a 1920 craftsman bungalow as well. I like that old stuff too! I'll bet you're a nut for victorian wallpaper also. I prefer the days when the designs on walls, rugs and linoleum demanded your attention!
ReplyDeleteOur house isn't a bungalow, but I do love that style. And I also love layered patterns (I'm a maximalist miniaturist by nature) but I married a man with a powerful belief in white walls. Luckily he has softened a bit over the years-- & despite his zen preferences he condones a surprising amount of odd stuff that has accumulated around here-- but Victorian wallpaper would still probably be grounds for divorce! :-D
